In practically every aspect of life, you must learn to set boundaries for yourself as well as for others. Some people find that setting boundaries, particularly when they are for your own good, is difficult to do and even more difficult to stick to. Most people who suffer from obesity are eager to please others and constantly put other people’s well-being before their own. In order to successfully lose weight and maintain that loss via a healthier, more active lifestyle, boundaries are a necessity.

If your children and your spouse’s needs consistently come before yours, then you need to step back and think about what you put off in your life in order to meet their needs. Granted, some things are important and must be taken care of immediately, such as medical and educational issues. However, if their needs are things that can wait, then that is the time when you need to put yourself first. You need to make time for yourself, for your emotional well-being, and make time for activities you might have decided to participate in for your health and fitness.

Before and after patients undergo obesity surgery in Dallas it is often recommended that they attend certain group sessions that are set up to teach them about setting boundaries, among other things. In nearly every part of the country there are obesity surgery support groups that help patients along their weight loss journey. If you think you have boundary issues, other patients who are in the same position may be the key to helping you overcome those issues.

For many people that struggle with their weight, one of the biggest causes of overeating is emotional hunger. After having obesity surgery in Dallas your body will not become as hungry as it once would, and your body’s desire for food will decrease, but for many people the emotional desire to eat does not go away. Separating head hunger from physical hunger is crucial to overcoming the desire to overeat.

Head hunger does not depend upon your body’s need for food. Instead, head hunger is reliant upon emotional and social cues. Many people are subject to these desires. For example, going to a movie after a big dinner out with your family may sound like a great amount of fun, but as you have just had dinner it is not your stomach that is in need of popcorn and candy. Instead, you are falling subject to a social cue to eat.

Physical hunger is a natural occurrence that is necessary to survival. When your body becomes physically hungry you may experience a gnawing or empty feeling. Many people grow nervous or jittery as they become hungry. After weight loss surgery it is important to pay attention to these hunger cues and really get to know your body inside and out. By understanding the times of day that you grow hungry and the situations in which you are tempted to overeat due to head hunger you can steadily work towards meeting your weight loss goal.

According to a recent study, speaking with your weight loss specialist can be one of the most beneficial steps that you can take towards reaching your weight loss goal. Approximately two-thirds of the US population is either overweight or obese, which is a serious health risk that needs to be addressed. Although you may feel uncomfortable talking to your doctor about your weight, it is one of the important discussions that may help to improve your health. Past research concerning tobacco use among adults indicated that when doctors talked to their patients about quitting smoking, the patients tended to be more successful at overcoming their poor habit. According to a recent study, similar results may be expected for successful weight management through discussing weight concerns with your doctor.

The study showed that patients that spoke with their doctor about their weight level were more successful at losing weight. For many patients, hearing the medical concerns that their excess weight could prompt was enough motivation to encourage them to start making necessary lifestyle changes in their diet and exercise habits. A lot of overweight and obese individuals have tried to lose weight on their own and have struggled to do so. Your weight loss surgeon could provide you with the tools necessary to help you finally reach your weight loss goal.

If you are living in the Lone Star State, visiting your weight loss surgeon in Dallas is highly recommended to help you deal with losing and managing your weight. With improved health and overall wellbeing, the rewards of talking to your doctor to help you lose weight far outweigh any discomfort that may be associated with this issue.

It is very common for people to gain weight over the holidays. There are so many parties and so many fat and calorie-laden foods available that it can be hard to stay on track with weight loss and weight maintenance goals. This is especially true for people who need to follow very restricted diets, such as those who have had lap band surgery in Denton.

If you have had lap band in Denton, you need to try to limit foods that are high in fat, sugar or calories, which unfortunately describes many of the foods commonly served over the holiday season. Try to concentrate on consuming mainly nutrient dense foods that are low in starch, sugar and fat.

You can take steps to help you stick with your diet, including enlisting your family and friends to help you out. Work together to come up with healthy menus that fit in with your diet, and get them to join you for walks and other non-food related activities.

Joining a support group can help you get through the holidays without giving in and eating too many off-limit treats, as can adopting a mantra and developing positive coping strategies, such as meditating or exercising.

Although it may be tempting to give in to the urge to eat lots of holiday goodies, for people who have had lap band surgery this can lead to unpleasant or dangerous side effects, including vomiting, bloating and diarrhea. It also increases your risk for gaining back some or all of the weight you have already lost since the surgery.

Although most Denton residents will come into a weight loss program prepared for the physical changes, it is perhaps the mental preparation that requires the most work. Individuals have to visualize where they want their lives to go, and must recognize that certain goals must be created and met in order to be successful in their weight loss goals.

Those who will be undergoing obesity surgery by way of a gastric bypass should pay special attention to their motivational goals after the operation has been completed. Exercise is always a good thing, but sometimes finding the motivation on a busy weekday evening or a cold winter morning can be difficult. Establishing a workout routine with a partner is one of the ways to work around this. This is a bit of psychological trickery, but it works. Knowing that someone else is counting on you for an exercise session can be the one thing that leads to action.

People should also be prepared to eat in a healthier manner. For example, if fried foods have been a staple in the household, this will have to change. Fatty oils will be replaced by a nutritious array of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Individuals should mentally prepare themselves for this so that there are no surprises. Becoming fully knowledgeable about the upcoming changes is often half the battle in making a smooth transition.

Ultimately, while mental preparation is only part of the weight loss game, it should not be underestimated. Combined with rigorous attention to the instructions of a medical professional, most people should see significant improvement in their appearance and a boost in confidence and overall self-esteem.

In addition to making changes to your diet and getting more exercise, paying attention to your stress levels may play an important role in achieving weight loss after bariatric surgery.

Stress can interfere with your weight loss goals after bariatric surgery in a number of ways. Physically, stress hormones can cause your body to hold on to fat, especially belly fat. Mentally, stress is often a trigger for emotional eating, which can quickly derail your weight loss goals. How can you manage your stress levels in order to lose weight more easily?

Practice relaxation techniques. This may include yoga, meditation, deep breathing, or simple stretching exercises. Be aware that these techniques can take practice—meaning repeated attempts—to achieve significant results. It may be difficult at first to quiet your mind, but in time you should find your stress levels reduced.

Keep your stress foods out of sight. If you tend to turn to fatty or sugary foods when you’re stressed, don’t keep these foods in your house. Stock your kitchen with healthy alternatives such as fresh fruit and vegetables.

Learn to cope with stress without food. Once you’ve replaced the junk food with healthy alternatives, make a list of other ways you can deal with your stress and other emotions. Achieving weight loss after bariatric surgery often means replacing eating habits with other behaviors. Consider talking to a friend, exercising or journaling.

Do you envy people who work out on a regular basis? Do you find yourself wishing you could do what you’ve seen others do but struggling to find the time, energy, or motivation to get started? The good news is that you, too, can make exercise a part of your daily life and enjoy the benefits of weight loss success. Take a closer look at the things that might be holding you back, and find out how to overcome them.

Overcoming 3 Obstacles To Daily Exercise

Fear of the gym: If you haven’t worked out in a while (or ever), stepping into a building filled with healthy people who know what they’re doing can be intimidating. But keep in mind that many of the people in the gym started off in the same situation you’re in now, and they became more confident and fit over time. More importantly, most of the people in a gym are there to do their workouts and get out, not compare themselves to you. If you need a confidence boost, consider hiring a personal trainer to get you started, joining a gender-specific gym, or going with a friend.

Don’t enjoy exercise: While some people seem to genuinely enjoy a strenuous workout, other people just don’t. If you really can’t find any pleasure in hitting the gym, you’re less likely to stick to an exercise routine long-term. Instead, find a type of physical activity you enjoy. Consider taking a kickboxing class, swimming, or joining a sporting league in your community.

Lack of time: Most people have full schedules these days, yet many busy people find the time to exercise. In fact, exercising might be even more important if you’re extremely busy, because it can give you extra energy and the mental clarity to get more done. But where can you find the time to exercise? Consider doing shorter exercise routines throughout the day, like a fifteen-minute walk in the morning and fifteen minutes of resistance training at night. You might also get up earlier and work out before you start your day, or swap a sedentary activity, like TV-watching, with an active one.

No one undergoes bariatric surgery with the hopes of losing weight for a little while and gaining it back after a few months. The goal of weight loss surgery is to permanently change the way you look and feel. But keeping the weight off is often the most difficult part of weight loss. What do you need to do to experience weight loss that lasts?

4 Ingredients for Weight Loss that Lasts

Structure. Building structure, whether it’s setting a specific time to work out or writing daily meal plans, helps you create new routines. Routines and habits help you reduce the amount of times you need to make the decision to stick with your lifestyle changes, which makes you less likely to get off track. You’re not making a new decision to workout every day—you’re going to the gym at 7:00 every morning because it’s part of a routine you created a long time ago.

Motivation. You may find that you have a lot of motivation when you begin a weight loss plan, but that your motivation decreases as time goes on. Create a plan for how you’ll keep yourself motivated. Set up milestones and rewards at different points along your journey and create a routine of monitoring and adjusting your motivation as needed.

Accountability. Once you’ve decided what you need to do and why you want to do it, how will you ensure that you actually follow through? Decide who or what you’ll be accountable to. You might share your goals with your friends or family members, enlist the support of a diet buddy, or hire a personal trainer or coach to help keep you accountable.

Support. You will have setbacks. You’ll have days when you don’t feel like staying on track. You’ll also have moments that you want to celebrate. A good support system can help you get through the rough patches and share in your accomplishments. You might join a support group, talk to a number of close friends, or join an online weight loss group to get support.

Build these four ingredients into your weight loss plan and you’re much more likely to enjoy weight loss that lasts.

A new survey shows that while Americans may be aware of today's growing obesity problem, most people believe it's a problem affecting someone else.

A new survey shows that while Americans may be aware of today’s growing obesity problem, most people believe it’s a problem affecting someone else.

A survey commissioned by GE Healthcare, The Cleveland Clinic, and Ochsner Health System asked more than 2,000 people from across the United States questions about their own health and the health of the nation as a whole. More than 50% of the respondents agreed that other people’s health was “going in the wrong direction,” but only 17% felt that they were among that group. Similarly, the survey found that most people think they’re healthier than their doctors believe them to be. Why the disconnect?

“Either people are denying reality about themselves or they don’t have the correct knowledge and believe they are doing the right things,” said study author Dr. Michael Roizen, chairman of The Cleveland Clinic’s Wellness Institute. “Personally, I think there is a lot of misinformation [about healthy habits].” However, Roizen also noted that physicians may have an exaggerated view of the state of the general population’s health because they tend to only see the people who are the sickest.

Another possible explanation for how people view their own health may be that they’re comparing themselves to their unhealthy and overweight peers. Eva To, a New York dietitian, explained that “Everything is relative. In America, everything is big. But if you put them in an Asian country, they will compare themselves to someone else.”

As obesity continues to rise in America, this survey may shed some light on why people aren’t taking preventative measures to safeguard against obesity-related health problems. It may be a combination of misinformation and misperception.

As often as you hear about it, you may think that the word stress is way over-used. People blame stress when they’re tired, cranky, emotional, distracted — just about any negative mood is tends to be attributed to this invisible attacker. But what exactly is stress?

Stress is an emotional and physical response to stimuli and situations that we find challenging. What makes it so difficult to pinpoint is the fact that everyone reacts to it in his or her own way.

Whether you have a high tolerance for challenges and a low stress level or a low tolerance for challenges and a high stress level, chances are you’ve experienced stress. For some people, stress manifests itself physically though symptoms such as:

A squeezing sensation in the chest

Sleeplessness

Hunger

Rapid heart beat

Headaches

Stress can also trigger emotional responses like crying, anger and distance. No matter how you react to stress or how often you experience it, you need to be prepared to deal with it. Learning skills such as relaxation and communication can go a long way toward lowering stress levels in your life.

When stressed we often make decisions and take action without thinking things through properly. In an attempt to feel better we can overeat, or make poor food choices. We can turn to unhealthy behaviors such as drinking alcohol as a way of coping. Or we can withdraw from social situations like family gatherings, support groups, and even doctor visits.

If you think that stress may be getting the better of you, take action immediately. Contact your doctor or your bariatric surgeon’s office and let them know what is happening. When you learn to handle stress, you improve your chances of success after weight loss surgery. You may be surprised at how quickly things can be turned around with just a little help from the right people.
