The LAP-BAND® System has replaced vertical banded gastroplasty as the restrictive procedure of choice. An adjustable plastic band known as a LAP-BAND is placed via laparoscopic surgery around the top of the stomach to restrict the amount of food that can enter the stomach at any one time. The restriction causes patients to feel full shortly after eating. This rapid sensation of fullness is called early satiety. LAP-BAND bariatric procedures have been safely performed in Europe for a number of years with a great deal of success. The popularity of LAP-BAND procedures has risen in the US during recent years because it is a minimally invasive technique with a low-risk profile. Patients who have a LAP-BAND tend to lose weight more gradually than do patients who have had the gastric bypass procedures described on this site. Weight loss in LAP-BAND patients appears to be more dependent on good education and follow-up. |
