Gastric Bypass Weight Loss Surgery

Dallas and Fort Worth Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery

Gastric Bypass weight loss surgeryA Roux-en-Y gastric bypass employs the combination of restriction of the stomach's holding capacity and a lesser degree of malabsorption than the duodenal switch.

A small pouch is formed by completely stapling off the upper portion of the stomach.  Then a new outlet is made into a limb of the small intestine that is created by dividing the intestine below and swinging one end up to the stomach.

The other end of the divided intestine is then reconnected downstream forming the 'Y' as noted in the name of the procedure.  By doing this, the majority of the stomach and a portion of the small intestine which holds most of the digestive enzyme is bypassed by the food that is taken in.  However, the food and the digestive enzymes from the bypassed portion of the stomach and small intestine come together at the 'Y' connection and progress through a common limb of intestine leading to the colon with sufficient length to absorb the nutrients that the body needs to meet its needs.
