Hydration after Bariatric Surgery

Staying hydrated is absolutely critical after bariatric surgery. Water is an essential nutrient that your body needs to heal and function properly. Staying hydrated will enhance your weight loss and wellness efforts as well as prevent you from succumbing to the effects of dehydration.

Symptoms of dehydration include:

  • Fatigue
  • Dry skin
  • Headache
  • Decreased urine output

Following bariatric surgery your stomach size is smaller. This can make staying hydrated difficult, as your stomach will hold less liquid than it did previously. After weight loss surgery you should consume at least 64 ounces of water daily. Dr. Stewart can provide you with more precise instructions on the ideal amount of water for your needs.

Here are a few tips to help you stay hydrated:

  • Carry a water bottle with you at all times and drink water consistently throughout the day.
  • Caffeine will dehydrate you and should be avoided. For every cup of coffee consumed you will need to drink four additional cups of water.
  • Drink water as often as possible and refrain from sugary drinks like juices and sodas.

A New Way of Drinking after Weight Loss Surgery

Following weight loss surgery at least half of your fluid intake should be from water. Other beverages that can become a healthy component of your diet include:

  • Unsweetened teas
  • Milk
  • No-sugar-added juice

In addition to the types of beverages you are consuming you will need to change the way that you are drinking to remain healthy after weight loss surgery. Certain drinking habits can cause severe discomfort.

After weight loss surgery follow the guidelines below to avoid complications:

  • Avoid drinking while eating as this will fill up space needed to for nutrient-rich foods.
  • Avoid carbonated beverages, including sparkling water.
  • Avoid drinking out of straws as they will deliver extra air to your stomach.
  • Avoid alcohol at first. Dr. Stewart will tell you when you are able to handle drinking alcohol again.
  • Do not gulp beverages. Take small sips to avoid filling your stomach too quickly.

Sugar-filled drinks can be high in calories and hurt your weight-loss progress, even causing you to re-gain weight. High-sugar drinks can lead to dumping in people who have had certain weight loss procedures, including gastric bypass surgery. Dumping happens when simple carbohydrates pass through the stomach very quickly and are subsequently “dumped” into the small intestine. Symptoms of dumping include gas, nausea, racing heart rate and cold sweats.
